When we talk about sustainability in fashion, attention often focuses on fabrics, dyes and production volumes.
Yet some of the most significant environmental impacts hide in the smallest details.
One of them is buttons.
Billions of buttons, almost no second life.
Every year the fashion industry produces tens of billions of garments. Each item contains multiple components: fabric, stitching, labels and closures. Buttons are produced in enormous quantities, mostly in plastic.
Yet they are rarely reused or recycled. When a shirt is discarded, buttons usually end up:
- in landfills
- in incinerators together with textile waste
- excluded from recycling processes because of mixed materials
There is no global statistic tracking discarded buttons. They disappear into the much larger problem of textile waste.
No stock, no waste
We go beyond simply designing a reusable closure. Our shirts are made to order, which means:
- no unnecessary stock
- no unsold inventory
- no extra garments left on shelves
Every shirt exists because someone wants it — not to fill a warehouse. This approach dramatically reduces environmental impact compared to traditional mass production.
When a small defect shortens a garment’s life
Buttons are often the first part to fail. They loosen. They break. They fall off.
In most cases:
- the shirt is not repaired
- the garment is discarded
- the value of the materials is lost
A single fragile detail can prematurely end the life of a shirt that is otherwise perfectly wearable.
Designing for reuse, not replacement
The magnetic closure was born from a simple question: What if the most technical part of a shirt didn’t have to be thrown away with the garment?
Instead of traditional buttons, we use a removable magnetic closure that:
- is durable and resistant
- can be removed
- can be reused on another magnetic shirt
Combined with made-to-order production, this system ensures that every shirt — and its components — lasts as long as possible with minimal waste.
Less waste through intelligent design
By eliminating traditional buttons, introducing a reusable closure and producing only on demand, we:
- reduce fragile components
- extend the functional life of each garment
- avoid overproduction
- encourage reuse instead of disposal
Sustainability is not measured by labels. It is measured by intelligent design choices and responsible production.
